Calvin Jackson Cloninger, 87, formerly of Stanley, died January 7, 2018 at his residence. He was born in Stanley, son of the late Robert Milton and Hattie Long Cloninger, and was preceded in death by two sisters Margaret Gillespie and Laura Jane Garrison, and four brothers Ladd, Melvin, Charles, and Howard Cloninger. Mr. Cloninger served in the US Navy during the Korean War, and retired after many years as a mechanic with Craig Dodge in Gastonia.  Survivors include his wife of 67 1/2 years Geraldine Wright Cloninger, two daughters Debbie Poarch and husband Carroll of Gastonia, Pam Poarch and husband Kevin of Dallas, a special grand daughter Tara Brown and husband Danny of Dallas, his only grandson Kyle Poarch and wife Tiffany of Kings Mountain, two granddaughters and 8 great grandchildren.  A graveside service conducted by Chaplain Greg Qualls will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly from 1:30 pm until 2:45 p.m.  Military honors will be provided by the US Navy Honor Guard and the service will conclude with the "releasing of the doves".  Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, PO Box 3984, Gastonia NC 28053.
