David Eugene "Hoot" Gibson, 66, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at his home. He was born in Mecklenburg County, son of the late David Harrison and Esther Langley Gibson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Gibson Jonas.
He was a graduate of South Point High School, where he played football, and was later drafted into their Football Hall of Fame. Hoot was employed with the Gastonia Police Department for over 25 years and retired as a homicide detective. He was a member of Way Of The Cross Baptist Church, Mount Holly where he served as a Deacon for 32 years.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kim Andrews Gibson; his daughter, Kimberly Gibson Abernathy (Gene), his son, Jeramy Gibson; his sister, Nancy Gibson Mitchem; his brother-in-law, Billy Jonas; his grandchildren, Justin (J.J.) Gibson, William (Wally) Gibson, Kayden (K.B.) Abernathy and Mychalia Abernathy; and his former daughter-in-law, Michelle Gibson Nichols.
A service to celebrate Hoot's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Way Of The Cross Baptist Church. Mount Hollly. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday at Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly.
