Horace Emmitt “Red” Poteat, 93, passed away on January 22, 2018 at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Salisbury. Red was born on March 26, 1924, in Cleveland County, son of the late Hatcher Poteat and Verdie Wilson Poteat, and brother of the late Rebecca Mode. In addition to his parents and sister, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Sue Etters Poteat and his son Joe Poteat.
Red was a U.S. Army WWII veteran who drove and repaired half-track vehicles under General George Patton’s 3rd Army in Europe. Most of his career was spent as a GM Specialist auto mechanic and owner of Poteat’s Garage in Stanley, NC.
Survivors include a daughter, Carmen Geiger and husband Mark of Charlotte, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Mr. Poteat will be held at 2:30 pm on Thursday January 25th at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, Mount Holly, with the Rev. David McClure officiating. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Stanley, 409 Old Mount Holly Road, Stanley, NC, 28164.
