John Robert Merwin of Stanley, passed away suddenly on January 10, 2019. John was born in Warren, Ohio on August 25, 1948. After a short time in the Navy, he became a police officer in Cortland, Ohio. He moved to Charlotte and in 1991 became a police officer for the City of Charlotte working at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. He worked as a K-9 unit for six years during his tenure with Charlotte. John loved life. His greatest passions were photography and his beloved dogs. He enjoyed simple things like trips with friends and family, watching TV with his wife and fur babies, fishing, the occasional cigar, and lunches with his friend Bert. He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and a grandson Dustin. John is survived by his wife of 16 years, Debbie King Merwin; his children Joyce Ann Merwin Bucci of Sharpsville, PA and Robert Merwin of Hilton Head, SC; a brother Terry Merwin of Warren, OH; stepchildren Lisa Helderman (Chad), Tami Gilman (Kevin), Scott James (Brandy), Brian James, Tonya James (Jim Dunbar), and Chris Watts (Wanda). His crazy, wonderful blended family gave him three grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; fourteen step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. A celebration of John's life will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2019 at New Covenant United Methodist Church, 14514 Lucia Riverbend Highway, Mount Holly. The family will greet guests beginning at 1:30 until 2:45 prior to the service.
