Leonard David Smith

Leonard David Smith, 64, of Charlotte, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 1, 2020.  He was born in Mecklenburg County, son of the late Kenneth Hughes Smith, Sr. and Mary Ellen Starnes Smith.  Leonard graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1973.  He followed in his fathers footsteps to become a sheet metal journeyman.  Upon graduating, he earned his sheet metal teaching certification from Ohio State in 1987 and taught welding classes at CPCC from 1987-1990.  Leonard was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener, raising his family in the great outdoors. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, especially when he could be outside.  He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson Carrigan Hunter; brother-in-law Don (Dee) Gibson.  He is survived by his wife Kathy; children Nicole (Heriberto) Marin, Daniel (Leslie) Smith, Benjamin (Ashley) Smith and Rebekah (Steven) Hunter; grandchildren Morgan Smith, Greyson and Gavin Jackson, Eric and Isabel Marin, Cody Holiday, Olivia Smith, Tyler, Katie, Jacob and Brayden Smith, and Lucas Hunter; in-laws Paul and Jeanette Gibson; brothers Kenneth (Melanie) Smith and Charlie (Kathy) Smith; aunts Emily Sutton and Juanita Wendell; and special people in his heart, Charlotte and Katee Smith, Teresa and Garrett Gibson and Madison and Gabriel Patterson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly.  The family will greet guests for one hour prior to the service beginning at noon.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kindermourn at www.kindermourn.org/donate, the March of Dimes at https://www.marchofdimes.org/giving/support-general.aspx, or to the American Heart Association at www.heart.org.
