Margaret Henderson Obituary

Mrs. Margaret Sue (Cope) Henderson, age 81, passed away on June 21, 2018. Born November 17, 1936 in Ranlo, NC, Margaret was the daughter of the late Hobart and Bertie Cope.

Graduating from Flora Macdonald College in 1960, Margaret went on to teach school in Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties in NC, with the last 22 years spent teaching fourth grade at Pawtuckett Elementary School in Charlotte, NC. She was passionate about education, and always had fun learning materials on hand for her children and grandchildren.

Margaret was united in marriage to Floyd Thomas Henderson of Cramerton, NC on July 21, 1957 at Maylo Methodist Church in Ranlo, NC.  They were inseparable for more than 60 years, and were blessed with four children, ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.  They made their home in Charlotte, NC and, more recently, Stanley, NC.

In addition to her loving husband, Floyd, her sister, Carolyn Caldwell of Stanley, NC and her brother, Richard Cope (Judy) of Waynesville, NC, she is survived by her children and their cherished spouses: Nancy Cozart (Art) of Stanley, NC, Susan Kinsey (Nick) of Raleigh, NC, Patricia Stamey (Mark) of Anderson, SC and Tom Henderson of Kernersville, NC.

As “Mamaw,” her life was incredibly enriched by her beloved grandchildren, Shannon Duckworth (Brian), Kristen Cozart, Christopher Sullivan, Rachel Kinsey, Cameron Cozart, Matthew Stamey, Samuel Kinsey, Olivia Henderson, Lauren Maness, and Gabe Henderson, and her great-granddaughter, Eira Yoder.

A life-long member of the Methodist Church, Margaret often sang in the church choir with her beautiful soprano voice. Members of Big Spring United Methodist Church in Charlotte for more than 30 years, she and Floyd later joined First United Methodist Church in Stanley.  Margaret lived her faith serving in the United Methodist Women and on the Administrative Council, and teaching Sunday school.

Margaret and Floyd loved to travel, and were always on the go. Together they visited 47 states, eagerly looking forward to each new adventure. Along with Floyd, Margaret was also an active member of the Stanley Lions Club. She hosted many cookouts and parties, loving the time she spent with family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, June 25, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Stanley, NC, with the Rev. Noel Sweezy officiating.  The family will receive friends afterwards at her home in Stanley from 2:00 to 3:45 pm. A private family interment will follow at Hillcrest Gardens in Mt. Holly, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church or Hospice & Palliative Care Lincoln County.  The family would also like to thank the staffs of Stanley Total Living Center and Stress Free Home Care for the loving care and support they provided to Margaret and the family.
