David Lee Coffey

David Lee Coffey, 77 of Stanley NC, made his peaceful heavenly journey home on July 22, 2024.  He was born in Sanford, NC and was the son of the late Fred Coffey Sr. and Della McGlamery Coffey. He joined the Navy April of 1966. He was a radarman for 4 years with the United States Navy and also served many years in the Reserves.  He often reminisced of being in Santi Domingo in 1965 and refueling small sea ships. David was a member of the American Legion Post #266 for 43 years where he served in many capacities such as the commissioner of the Area IV Legion, Adjutant, finance officer and was also inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. He spent countless hours and devoted himself selflessly to the young men in legion baseball. He had a passion every Christmas to help coordinate a Christmas dinner and to help shop and and purchase gifts for those who needed help. He was a member of the committee of POW in Raleigh, and also volunteered at Camp Centurion for Veterans.  David was also a member of the 40/8 society which is a symbol of a shared sacrifice to those soldiers for exemplary service.David was an honorary original member of the Gaston Honor Guard in which he served honorably at numerous military services for his fallen brethren. David will be sorely missed for his helpful acts of kindness and his willingness to help others.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Peggy Orenduff.  Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Shirley Coffey, as well as his daughter Michelle Coffey and a sister Debra Ruth Honaker of Bristol, TN.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday July 26, 2024 in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Friday also at the chapel at Woodlawn and a military honors committal will be held at 3:00pm at Hillcrest Gardens.
