Dorcas Virginia (Grice) Murphy

Dorcas Virginia Grice Murphy, went home to be with her lord on Monday January 9, 2023.  She was born in Gaston County and was the daughter of the late George and Mary Benton Grice.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years James S. Murphy; a granddaughter Brittany Murphy; her brothers: Elliot Grice, Eric Grice, J.A. O Quinn, James Grice, John Grice, and Floyd Grice; and her sisters: Mrytle White, and Catherine Arrowood.  She was an R.N. for Dr. Anthony and retired when her children were born.  She was active in serving her community.  She volunteered with the Red Cross as the Blood Services Volunteer Coordinator where she organized and managed all of the blood mobiles in Stanley for many years.  She was awarded the Gaston County Volunteer of the year in 1992 for her service to the American Red Cross.  She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Stanley where she taught Sunday School.  Ms. Murphy was also awarded the Order of The Eastern Star.  Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Mary Stuart Koone (Jerry), John W. (Bill) Murphy (Debroh) and Thomas S. Murphy (Kim); her grandchildren: Carla Bollinger, Kimberly Koone, Erika Waters, James T. Murphy, Jonathan Murphy, Ryan Murphy, and Chloe Stover; her great grandchildren: Tyler Elmore, and Ridge Waters; her sister: Sally G. Wooten; her brother in laws: Ted Murphy (Peggy), B.G. Arrowood, and Luther Murphy (Rhonda); as well as her sister in laws: Judy Outlaw (Bernard), Martha Murphy, and Wanda Murphy.  A service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday January 15, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church in Stanley.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. also at the Church.  Burial will follow at Stanley Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Gaston Hospice: PO Box 3984 Gastonia, NC 28054 or to First Presbyterian Church Stanley: 512 Old Mount Holly Rd. Stanley, NC 28164.  Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mount Holly is serving the Murphy Family.
