Garland Marshall Overman

SMSgt (Ret) Marshall Overman, age 77, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday May 16, 2023 at Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas.  He was born in Guilford County and was the son of the late Garland and Edith Wicker Overman.  Marshall proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and later served in the Air National Guard for many years.  SMSgt (Ret) Overman joined the United States Air Force on 18 January 1966 and served on active duty until his discharge and transfer to the Air Force Reserve on 5 Dec 1969, remaining in the Reserves until separation on 17 January 1972.  He enlisted in the N.C. Air National Guard on 6 December 1975 and served until his retirement on 5 Mar 2006, completing over 36 years of faithful and dedicated service.  The Overman’s were truly a “Guard Family” as he and his wife Diane both retired from the NC Air National Guard, many of you know and worked with Diane initially in the 145 Comm Flt and later as the Administrative Assistant to several Wing Commanders.   He particularly   enjoyed his time spent as a child on his Aunt and Uncle's farm where he learned many valuable life lessons.  In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing as well as listening to oldies music from the 1950's and 1960's.  Marshall was most proud of being a grandfather to his grandson.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his aunt and uncle Fairie Mae and Curtis Boyles. 

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 56 years Diane Hartman Overman; and his children: Kimberly Huffstetler (Monte), Sonya Carver (Steven), and Karen Sherrill (David), as well as his grandson Tucker Sherrill.  The family will greet guests from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday May 20, 2023 at Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly.  The family will also greet guests at Shiloh Methodist Church in Liberty: 7394 Shiloh Rd. Liberty, NC 27298 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Monday May 22, 2023.  Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Robin Johnson Hospice House: 5005 Shepards Way Dallas, NC 28034, or to Shiloh Methodist Church: PO Box 774 Liberty, NC 27298
