James Cecil King, Jr. died at home on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. He is now present with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Cecil was born on December 15, 1938, in Charlotte, to Margaret Alley King and James Cecil King, Sr. of Kingston Ave. in Wilmore. The family were very active members of Calvary United Methodist Church where Cecil became a Sunday School teacher to teens as a young man. Cecil graduated from Central High School and Duke University in 1963, with a business degree. While at Duke, Cecil was selected as a "walk-on" basketball player. He started his own real estate business, "Twin Real Estate", in honor of his favorite baseball team, the Minnesota Twins. Cecil married Nona Thompson in 1987, the year the Twins won the World Series. He loved baseball, classical music, hymns, scripture, and many friends at both Pritchard Memorial Baptist, and First Presbyterian Church, where he was a devoted member. In addition to his wife, his remaining family includes Cynthia Thompson Mates, Vincent Mates, and Colin Daniel Mates of Kings Mountain, NC.
A service to celebrate Cecil's life will be held at 12: 00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, Charlotte. The family will greet guests from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the church.
Memorials may be made to Prichard Memorial Baptist Church (Ridgecrest Summer Camp fund), 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203. Condolence messages may be sent to the family by visiting www.woodlawnfuneral.org. Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mount Holly is caring for Mr. King's family.
