James "Mitch" Mitchell Culp

James Mitchell “Mitch” Culp entered his eternal rest with Jesus on May 24, 2026. He was born on August 20, 1943 and is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Bruce Culp and “J.V.” Hudson Culp of Stanly County N.C. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Brenda Smith Culp of Belmont, N.C. and his two daughters Kristyna Culp (Neal Caldwell) of Marvin N.C. and Keri Michele Culp of Charlotte N.C.

Mitch served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 – 1964 on the USS Vesole. He was serving onboard in 1962, when it was deployed for blockade operations during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon leaving the Navy he spent 35 years with Duke Energy, from 1964 until retiring in 1999. He enjoyed his career at Duke and met many lifelong friends there. He loved going to breakfast at Rita’s once a month with the Duke Energy retirees and rarely missed an opportunity to be there.

He was a loving husband and devoted father. In 1972 he accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord of his life and spent the rest of his days as a servant of God. He loved to garden, work with wood and above all study and discuss the Bible. He liked to see people reach their potential in their work as well as their everyday life.

In November of 2023, Mitch started working on his book, Everyday Words from an Everyday Man. The book was published in February of 2026. It is a collection of his thoughts on the opportunities, experiences, and situations he encountered during his life to help others enrich their relationship with God.

Anyone who knew Mitch knows that he loved to hear or tell a good story, even if it was embellished to make it more interesting.

He wrote most of these final words with a few details added by his wife and daughters. He had a big personality and has left a big hole in our hearts. We grieve the loss of him as a way to honor the love we shared with him. We know he’s happy now riding his tractor around in the big garden in the sky.
