Jimmy Lee Hovis 88, of Gastonia, NC passed away Sunday May 19, 2024. Jim or Jake, as he was called by friends and family, was the son of the late Clyde Quickel Hovis and Corrine Spargo Hovis.
Jim was born in Stanley, North Carolina in 1935 and grew up in Belmont. He graduated from Belmont High School and Belmont Abbey College. After College, he served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. He was the owner/operator of J and J Garage in Belmont until he retired.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Doris Jean Smith Hovis, and a brother Alfred Hovis. He is survived by his stepchildren, Pamela Heim (Dennis) of Gastonia, and Scott Poole (Ginni) of Belmont, two grandchildren, Brenna Chandler (Brian) of Kannapolis, Collier Poole of Belmont, and a great granddaughter, Charley Chandler of Kannapolis.
Jim joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church after his marriage to Doris in 1985 and was a faithful member there for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 3717 Hickory Grove Rd. Gastonia, NC 28056.
The family would like to thank the staff at Stanley Total Living and VIA Health Partners-Hospice for taking excellent care of Jim during the final months of his life.
