Larry Lavern Benfield, Sr., 80, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025. He was born in Mecklenburg County, son of the late Annie Lilian Benfield. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Alinda Diane Chambers Benfield; and his daughters, Karen Ann Carpenter and Lisa Dawn Pack. Mr. Benfield was a proud, 10-year Veteran of the U.S. Army who spent two tours in Vietnam. For 13 years he was a plant manager for Vision Hosiery and then worked in maintenance at Carillon Assisted Living. He was a former president of the Gaston Amateur Astronomy Club at the Schiele Museum and was an active member of Goshen Free Will Baptist Church. He was always striving to learn all that he could about the world he loved.
Mr. Benfield is survived by his son, Larry L. Benfield, II (Jennifer); his grandchildren, John Pack, Jarrod Pack, Jonathan Pack, Jeremy Mahoney (Trisha), and Brad Carpenter; 1 great-grandchild; and 2 great great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Kathy Bradshaw and Vickie Chambers; his brother-in-law, Elvis Bradshaw; and his very special friend, Carol Gambale.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Benfield will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, Mount Holly. The family will greet guests from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
