Maerell Elizabeth (Holland) Burris

Maerell “Mae” Holland Burris, age 99, of Mount Holly, NC passed away peacefully at home on July 19, 2022. She was born to the late Samuel and Letcher Holland in 1923 in Jackson County, GA. She married the love of her life, Clyde Rowe Burris in 1941 . They resided in Conover, NC after Clyde’s military service in WWII, and moved to Mount Holly when he joined the NC Highway Patrol in 1952. Clyde preceded her in death in April 1995. Her family takes great comfort that they are now reunited in heaven, as she had missed him greatly!

Maerell is survived by her daughters Elizabeth (Becky) Dellinger and Debra (Debbie) Hartness (Husband - Danny), and brother Edward Holland. She is also survived by her grandchildren Elizabeth Davis (Husband Steve), Katherine Huffstickler (Husband Brian), Caroline Beck (Husband Rob), Amanda Allen (Husband Arthur). Maerell loved her family and was especially proud of her great grandchildren - Jackson Davis, Jordan Davis, Anna Huffstickler, Andrew Huffstickler, Sydney Beck, Amelia (Milly) Allen, and Alexandria (Xander) Allen. She was affectionately known as “Nanny” by her family members, and she loved doting on each and every one of them! There are also many cousins, nieces and nephews that Maerell loved dearly.

Maerell was active in the First United Methodist Church in Mount Holly. She loved her church family and spoke of them often. She also had many friends in her neighborhood who brought her much joy.

After her retirement from Talon in Stanley, Maerell became an avid gardener, and her lawn and flower beds were always meticulously manicured. It wasn’t until recently that she even allowed assistance to maintain them! She was also an amazing cook! Her family could not wait to gather around her table to enjoy her yummy creations. Her recipes will be cherished for generations to come.

While Mae’s family is grieving over the loss of their beloved mother, sister, and “Nanny”, they choose to remember the joy and happiness she exuded to the world and take comfort that she is now with the Heavenly Father in His beautiful garden.

The family also wishes to thank Stress Free Home Care for their assistance in Maerell’s care which allowed her to stay in the home she loved.

Visitation will be held at 1PM on Sunday, July 24, 2022 at First United Methodist Church in Mount Holly, NC. A service to honor her life will be held following at 2PM. The family will have a private graveside service at Hillcrest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 140 North Main Street, Mount Holly, NC.
