Martha Moss Burton

On August 23, 2026, Martha Moss Burton, 81, was called home into the arms of Jesus. She passed away peacefully at Courtland Terrace in Gastonia, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving children.

Martha was born in York, South Carolina, on June 1, 1945, to the late Otis Adell Moss and Mattie Sisk Moss. She spent many dedicated years working at both Plants 3 and 19 for Fieldcrest Cannon in York until her retirement. Martha loved her plants and seemed to have a green thumb as her ability to tend and garden her flowers was remarkable.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Mattie Moss; her husband, Louis Joseph Burton; her son, Christopher Morrison; her sisters, Irene Rose, Rebecca Moss, and Ann Rogers; her brother, Elijah Moss; and her stepchildren, Earl Burton and Inez Burton.

Left to cherish her memory are her sisters, Virginia Donaldson (George) of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and Thelma Whitman of Easley, South Carolina. She is also survived by her children, Albert Morrison of Catawba, South Carolina, Louise Morrison Hoyle (Ricky) of Clover, South Carolina, Cynthia Morrison Buchanan (Chris) of Stanley, North Carolina, and Joe Lee Burton of Rock Hill, South Carolina; and her stepchildren, Roger Burton (Janet) of York, South Carolina, and Ronnie Burton of Columbia, South Carolina.

Martha loved her family deeply. Along with the nine children she raised, she also proudly raised several of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of 23 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. All of her family loved her dearly and will miss her deeply.

A woman of deep and enduring faith, Martha grew up in the church and loved the Lord and her church family. She possessed a great passion for gospel music and loved to sing. Her children fondly remember hearing their mother sing of Jesus. Martha knew that when times were hard, she could always call on her Savior. Although she lived a meager life here on earth, her family rests in the comfort of knowing she is now with the One she loved to praise, walking on streets of the purest gold. "But we are confident, and have a good will to be absent rather from the body, and to be present with the Lord." — 2 Corinthians 5:8

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday August 29, 2026 in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly with Pastor Ritchie Doss officiating.  The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service on Saturday also at the Funeral Home.   Burial will immediately follow the service at the Stanley Cemetery.
