Mary Ellen "Cooke" Cornelius, age 85 went home to be with her Lord on Sunday November 12, 2023 at the Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas. She was born in Gaston County and was the daughter of the late Fred and Georgia Huffstetler Cornelius. She worked as a teacher in the Gaston County Schools for 30 plus years with the majority of her career at Bessemer City Primary School. She had a strong faith and was most recently a member of the Presbyterian Church of Lowell. In her retirement, she enjoyed painting and spending time with her granddaughter and great grandsons.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers: Jennings Cornelius and Joe Cornelius, and a sister Nancy McCaslin. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Jennifer Taylor Putnam and her spouse Todd, and Lindsey Marie Cooke and her spouse Jason Amspacher; her siblings: Ray Cornelius, Tony Cornelius, Rachel Eckard, and Jane Leatherman; her granddaughter Whitney Putnam Faircloth and her spouse Matt; her great grandsons: Houston Faircloth, and Braden Faircloth, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday November 18, 2023 in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday also at the Funeral Home. Entombment will follow the service at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly. At Mary's request, the family would ask that you do not send blue flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Robin Johnson Hospice House: 5005 Shepards Way Dallas, NC 28034. Arrangements are in the care of Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mount Holly.
