Robert “Bob” Dewey McCorkle, Jr., 78, of Harrisburg, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, at his residence. He was born May 20, 1942, in Mecklenburg County, the son of the late Robert Dewey McCorkle, Sr. and Jean Ballard McCorkle.
EM2 McCorkle was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was honored to have served on the USS Lake Champlain and enjoyed sharing military stories with his family.
Bob spent his civilian career caring for others as a certified optician. He loved helping others improve their lives by helping them to see clearly. Despite his own struggle with macular degeneration, he continued to serve others in this role until just before his death.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Jennifer McCorkle Rice and husband John of Maiden, NC; Danielle Kaye Robison of Charlotte, NC; Robert "Mac" Dewey McCorkle, III of Harrisburg, NC; and Kaitlynn Alyssa McCorkle McQueen and husband Landon of Mt. Holly, NC. Bob is also survived by his siblings Sara Cameron and husband Larry of St. Paul’s, NC; Arthur McCorkle of Unicoi, TN; James McCorkle of Charlotte, NC; and William McCorkle and wife Debbie of Clover, SC. Bob’s greatest joy was being “Boppa” to his grandchildren Keegan Rice, Carter Rice, Kensington Rice, Camden Rice, Chandler McQueen, Brody McQueen, Jaxon McQueen, Raylan McQueen, and Arianne McQueen. He was beloved as Uncle Bob to numerous nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service, with military honors, will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at 2pm at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made in his name to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation for macular degeneration research (www.macular.org).
