Rodney L. Henkel
Rodney L. Henkel, 60, of Sapphire, NC, passed away peacefully on November 3rd 2025. A devoted husband, father, son, and brother, Rodney leaves behind a legacy of hard work, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his family.
Born to Paul and Jean Henkel, Rodney grew up alongside his siblings—brothers Colie, Rusty, and Ken, and sisters Cyndi and Sheila—learning early the value of loyalty and perseverance. For decades, he proudly worked as a heavy equipment operator, shaping the landscape with skill and dedication, his hands steady on the controls just as they were in life’s toughest moments. Rodney’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase a rock quarry in West Jefferson, North Carolina. He owned, operated, maintained and improved this quarry for over 10 years. Rodney also loved music and was a talented songwriter and musician.
Rodney is survived by his wife, Michelle and his sons, Travis and Jason, his granddaughter Lilly, his step children, Alex and Megan and step grandchildren, Conley, Haven and Carter, who all carry forward his pride and resilience; and his mother, Jean, whose love anchored him always, along with his siblings, and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will remember him for his warm heart, generous spirit, humor, musical talents, and the way he could fix anything with patience and a wrench.
A man of many words and deep feeling, Rodney lived simply and loved fiercely. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will endure in every story told, every family song sung, every machine he mastered, and every life he touched.
Visitation will be held at 1:00pm on November 7th, 2025 at New Covenant Church, located at 14514 Lucia Riverbend Hwy, Mt Holly, NC 28120 followed by a service at 2:00pm. Interment will follow service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Upstate Community Hospice House, located at 260 Fairwinds Dr, Landrum, SC 29356, in Rodney’s name.
