Ruth Mundy Obituary

Bessie Ruth Boyter Mundy, 100, a long-time resident of Mount Holly, NC, the beloved widow of Lester Osburn Mundy, went home to be with the Lord on May 28, 2024. She passed away in Lexington, SC, from complications associated with vascular dementia.

Daughter of the late Thomas Henry Boiter and Lillie Mae Nicholls Boiter, Mrs. Mundy was born December 12, 1923, in the Poplar Springs community of Moore, SC, in Spartanburg County. She and Lester were married on August 10, 1952, and celebrated 52 years together before his death in 2005.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Mundy was predeceased by an infant sister, Mary Lois Boiter; a sister, Mildred Louise Boyter Shapiro and her husband Harold; an infant brother, Thomas Watson Boiter; and a brother, Thomas Elwyn Boyter and his wife, Hellon Bragg “Polly” Boyter.

Survivors are two nephews, Tommy Shapiro and wife Pam, Morehead City, NC, and Donald Shapiro and wife Mary, Roswell, GA; two nieces, Janice Shapiro Stevens and husband Ray, Norfolk, VA, and Debbie Boyter, Moore, SC; and 23 great nieces and nephews.

Ruth, as she was so lovingly called, graduated from Duncan High School and Spartanburg Junior College and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Winthrop University. She was a member of the Alpha Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, the NEA and the NCEA. Ruth taught in the public schools of the Carolinas for 41 years, 33 of which were in Gaston County. She was a teacher at Mount Holly High School and retired from East Gaston High School as Guidance Counselor.

Ruth was a long-time and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Mount Holly for 64 years. She was a Deacon and served on various committees, including Home Bound, Bereavement, Spiritual Gifts, Pastor Search, Administrative Board, and as one of the original members of the Scholarship Committee formed in 1979. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 25 years.

The family expresses sincere thanks and appreciation to Kyle and the Amedisys Hospice Care team for the compassionate care given to Aunt Ruth during the past month.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at First Baptist Church, 300 S Main Street, Mount Holly, NC, officiated by Rev. Jeff Allen and Dr. Kendell Cameron. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, Ruth will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Gardens in Mount Holly.
