Thomas “Tommy” Bynum Obituary
Mount Holly – Thomas “Tommy” J. Bynum, 81, took his last earthly breath and was received by his heavenly father, “Jesus Christ,” on Sunday, July 21, 2024, as he was hospitalized at Caromont Regional Hospital in Gastonia, NC.
He was born on July 4, 1943, to the late Mack Lee Bynum, Sr., and Madge Nixon Bynum in Mount Holly, NC.
He leaves behind the love of his life, Frances Moore Bynum, wife of 60 years; daughter Kellie Ellis and husband Patrick; Julie Rollins and husband Kenneth; Grandchildren Autumn Ashe, Matthew Ellis and wife Ashley, Josh Ellis, Jay Bynum, Jesse Ellis, Maddison Hallman, and Bailey Rollins; and five great-grandchildren Liam, Lillyn, Lyndon, Ivy, and Lynda, as well as many nieces, nephews, and special friends that he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, W.A. Bynum, Wilton Bynum, Mack Bynum Jr., and Harold Bynum.
Tommy was the owner/operator of “Tommy Bynum Heating & A/C, Inc.” located in Belmont, NC, until 2018, when a cancer diagnosis gave him the insight to retire and sell the business to the current owners. He ran this business for over 40 years, where he ran it on the premise that doing the job the right way was the only way to have a successful business. Tommy’s love of the Lord was his true success story, as he was saved in 1985, and Catawba Heights Baptist Church became his home church from the day he was baptized. He never took for granted how God blessed him and took his gift of “never meeting a stranger” and used it to bring people to salvation. The day he was saved, he took his faith and walked every day as a child of God by “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord is not human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as Reward” – Colossians 3:23-24.
Some of the programs that have been important to him since becoming a Christian were Missions to Ukraine, Celebrate Recovery, Gaston County Pathways Drug Recovery, Travlin Light Motorcycle Ministry, NC Work Release Prison Ministry – Dallas, NC, and the Hope Trailer with outreach to our local homeless community.

Special Recognition:
Duke: Our family would like to thank the entire Duke Cancer Center team, including Dr. Michael Harrison (Our Quarterback—Oncologist) and Dr. Trey Mullikin (Radiation Oncologist), for taking such great care of Tommy over the years. Your compassion and understanding of such a complex disease and taking his well-being into account in every decision you made about his healthcare plan will never be forgotten. #weloveDuke
Caromont Regional Medical (CRH): Nurse Karly Brookover (IMCU-4th Floor - Room 4403) was a shining light during Tommy’s time at CRH in Gastonia, NC. Tommy was in the hospital for a long period of time, but no matter if she had him as a patient or not on the days she worked, she would always come by and check on him. She is a caring and compassionate person who exemplifies what being a nurse is all about. She went above and beyond to make him feel comfortable when we all knew his health was declining. If you ever have the honor of having this angel as a nurse, just know that you are in great hands.
