Thomas Wallace Cloninger, 77, of Charlotte, died Monday, February 1, 2021 at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born on March 1, 1943 in Hickory to the late James and Lucille Johnson Cloninger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Chris Cloninger, as well as his brother Jimmy Cloninger. Tom served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany. He was employed by Roadway Express, which later became FedEx. Tom also drove a school bus for East Gaston for 10 years and absolutely loved those children. He loved to play golf. He was a very active member of and loved his church, First United Methodist Church in Mount Holly, where he sang in the UMC Choir, and was active in, and a lifetime member of the United Methodist men. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Dianne Cloninger, who was the love of his life; children Scott Cloninger (Ashley), Scott Roberson (Joanne), and Tracy Smith (David); his loving sister Judy Cloninger; and five grandchildren Katie, Isaac, and Gresham Smith, and Lizzy and Alex Roberson. A service to celebrate Tom's life will be held at a later date in the garden at First United Methodist Church, Mount Holly. Arrangements are in the care of Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly.
