Walter Franklin Grimes, Jr., 89, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026. He was born in Washington, DC, son of the late Walker Franklin Grimes and Evelyn Betty Metz Grimes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Bratt Grimes; his sister, Helen Gooding; and his beloved dog and companion, Candy. Mr. Grimes was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and later worked as a federal employee at Cherry Point MCAS from 1969 until he retired in 1994. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with family and traveling. He was a proud Gideon.
Mr. Grimes is survived by his son, Walter "Tim" Grimes and his wife, Annette; his grandchildren, Heather Briggs (Brandon), Vanessa Richardson (Mark), Matthew Briggs, Theresa Grimes, Robert Grimes (Essence), and Tori Meyer (Dane); 12 great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Terry Bratt; his niece, Beth Bowen; and his nephews, Tommy Gooding and David Gooding.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Grimes will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly, NC. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the funeral home. To lay him to rest with his late wife, a graveside inurnment will be held at a later date at Forest Oaks Memorial Gardens, Havelock, NC.
