Joe Fred Helms

Joe Fred Helms, 75, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2018. He was born in Mecklenburg County, son of the late James and Ollie Braswell Helms. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Helms.

Joe loved the outdoors, especially the water. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed boating and spending time with his fishing buddies.

Joe is survived by his significant other of 40 years, Bernice Whitener; his daughters, Joyce Helms and Kim Burke and her husband, Rick; his brother, Thomas Helms; three sisters, Geraldine Lefler, Mary Edwards, and Delores Dulen; five grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Helms will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly with Reverend Patrick Maloy officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society by visiting www.cancer.org.
