Ann Caughman Obituary

Ann Lynn Caughman, 77, originally from Columbia, SC, passed away in North Carolina on May 14, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Walton Caughman and Keenan Gayden Caughman. She is survived by her sister, Cathryn (Kay) Caughman Sins of Atlanta, GA; her daughters, Michelle Darby Nelson (Nick) of Mooresville, NC, and Nan Darby Baron Burvenich (Peter) of Lady’s Island, SC; her cherished grandchildren, Tucker Baron, Ailey Kaitlyn Nelson, Peter Adam Burvenich, Grace Burvenich, Abigail Baron, and Laura Nelson; her cousin and best buddy of more than seventy-four years, Elizabeth (Beth) Baucom; and many other beloved family members, dear friends, and respected colleagues.

Ms. Caughman was a graduate of A.C. Flora High School and the University of South Carolina, where she earned her B.A., BSN, and MSN. She was a dedicated nurse who served her patients with great care for forty years and retired in 2015 from the WJB Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital. As a certified nurse practitioner, she specialized in the fields of adult care and gerontology. She also held the position of adjunct faculty member at the University of South Carolina.

She was a woman of deep faith and a lifelong Lutheran. A member of Living Springs Lutheran Church and former member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, she actively engaged in church music programs and community outreach. At Living Springs, she served on the church council, sang with the choir, participated in the ladies bible study, volunteered regularly with the backpack food ministry, and was a coordinator of the Disciples Helping Disciples program.

Ms. Caughman will be remembered by her family and friends for her compassion, empathy, and sense of humor, as well as her giving spirit. She loved animals, had a deep appreciation for the natural world, and particularly enjoyed watching and photographing birds. She was also an avid reader and liked listening to a wide variety of music. She delighted in spending time at the beach and in the mountains, especially at Pawleys Island, SC, and at Lutheridge in Arden, NC.

A memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on May 20, 2023, in Columbia, SC, at Living Springs Lutheran Church. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. The service may also be streamed on the Living Springs YouTube channel and the @livingspringscolumbia Facebook page.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation be made to Living Springs Lutheran Church, WDAV 89.9 classical public radio (Davidson, NC), the Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute (Charlotte, NC), or your local public library.
