Hugh Hovis, 93, went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2021. He was born April 7, 1928 in Stanley, son of the late Clarence W. and Dorothy M. Hovis. He was baptized on Palm Sunday 1941 at the age of 13, graduated from Stanley High School and continued his education at Kings Business College. He used those skills as an accountant and bookeeper. He married his loving wife Mary in August 1947. He retired in 1991 at Stanley Town Clerk and Gaston County magistrate. Mr. Hovis had been a long time member of Christ's Lutheran Church in Stanley and in recent years had faithfully attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Our Dad/Gramps was a man of few words but full of knowledge and wisdom. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Moore Helms Hovis, a daughter Janice H. Lowrance, sister Lucille H. Jetton, and a brother Ray W. Hovis. Survivors include two daughters Melanie Mills (Gerry) of Stanley, Marian Saltzer (Craig) of Thomasville, grandchildren Anna Farr, Kenny Lowrance, Dan Mullis, Jenny Byrd, Katie Williams and Elizabeth Lowrance, 16 grandchildren and his special caregiver Erica Aiken.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Hovis will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday September 21 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Kinman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Masks and social distancing are required. Interment will follow the service in Hillcrest Gardens. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mount Holly is serving the family of Mr. Hovis.
