Jim McGinnis Obituary

Marvin J McGinnis, 87 of Stanley died May 20, 2018 after a long and well fought struggle with illness. His family takes comfort that he is now with our Lord and reunited with his wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Randolph McGinnis.
Born in Lincoln County November 3, 1930 to Marvin Frank and Laura Mae Lawing McGinnis, Jim served as a 1st Class Tech Sergeant, 2nd Infantry Division in the US Army during the Korean War and was a proud veteran. He spent his life in the textile industry, working for Talon, Leslie Fay and retiring at Pharr Yarns, enjoying the prime years of American manufacturing.
Devoted to his family and friends, Jim was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stanley and until his wife’s illness participated in all activities concerning his three daughters, beginning with the Stanley Optimist Club and culminating in serving on the Stanley Town Council.
The many years of steadfast care of his wife Mary, and his determination and independence as his own body failed was a living testimony to his family, friends and strangers. Jim was predeceased by his wife and parents, two brothers Reid and Arthur McGinnis, sister Katherine Lewis all of Stanley, and sister Faye Bean of Hickory.
He is survived by his sister Ruby Fisher and husband Roger and brother Gary McGinnis and wife Terry, and sister in law Brenda McGinnis all of Stanley. His three daughters, Janet Buff of New Bern, Jane Bumgarner of Stanley and Lori McGinnis of Greensboro. Jim was especially proud and appreciative of his sons in law Joe Buff and Dale Bumgarner.
Jim’s legacy and pride rests on his grandchildren Joseph Buff and wife Amber of Raleigh, David Buff and wife Mallory of Ipswich, MA; Jarrett Bumgarner and wife Kaitlin of Concord and granddaughter Anna Bumgarner of Alexandria, VA. Of course, the apples of his eye, his great granddaughters Elliott Bumgarner and Arianna Buff, and great grandsons Anders, Connor and Brayden Buff.
The family appreciates the outstanding medical care of Dr Warwick Aiken and the care and compassion shown by Allen Drug of Stanley.

The funeral service, conducted by Pastor Jason Ballard and Reverend Dr. Tony Fulbright will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Stanley. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will follow in Hillcrest Gardens.
