Matthew Kelso Obituary
Matthew James Kelso, 51, of Mount Holly, NC passed away on May 17, 2023, due to a sudden heart attack.
Matt was born on February 5, 1972, to Jim and Doris Kelso in Great Falls, Montana and spent his early years in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska where he played on the golf and hockey teams. Matt graduated from high school in Gering, Nebraska and went on to play golf at Western Nebraska Community College. After college he was a golf professional, working at Thunderbird Golf Course in Phoenix, Arizona.
In 2005 he met Shannon, and they were married in Bermuda in 2009. They began their lives together in Pennsylvania and spent the last 10 years in North Carolina. They loved to travel where Matt always had a fly rod at the ready. Fly fishing, being on the water and hiking in the western NC mountains brought him great joy.
Matt had a multitude of creative hobbies too numerous to count, including sporting clays, gardening, and spending time on the lake where they lived. Matt was honing his culinary skills by making his own bacon, smoking cheese and making his own pickles.
Matt was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Kelso. He is survived by his wife, Shannon (Durfey) Kelso; his father, Jim Kelso; his sister, Julie (Cory) Kelso Heggem, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will take place in July in North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Project Healing Waters Charlotte chapter (9319 Kestral Ridge Drive, Charlotte, NC 28269) in Matts honor.
