Melissa Melton Cannon, 61, of Gastonia, met Jesus face to face and won her fight on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Hendersonville, daughter of Georgia Melton Morris and the late Dwight Melton. Melissa retired after 32 years with Gaston County Schools. She was a servant leader of children's ministries for many years as well as was on the social committee at Fairview Baptist Church in Gastonia. Her love for children and animals was immeasurable. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her stepfather Walter Morris; her grandparents Thomas and Ethel Melton and Horace and Foy Murray; and her fur baby Scruffy. In addition to her mother and her mother's fur baby Tigger, those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 42 years Barney Cannon; a son James Cannon and his wife Ashley; two grandchildren Cameran and Carson Cannon; a brother Mitch Melton and his wife Catina; their fur babies Roxey and Snickers; a niece Samantha Evans and spouse; two nephews Chris Black and spouse, and Marcus Black and spouse; her mother-in-law Joan Cannon; as well as her special friend who was like a sister, Pam Smith. The family will greet guests from 2:00 until 3:30 Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Fairview Baptist Church, 1706 W. Davidson Avenue in Gastonia. A service to celebrate Melissa's life will be held immediately following at 3:30, also at the church.
