Charles Angus Gunn, Jr., 89, of Mt. Holly, died Monday, November 20, 2017 at Stanley Total Living Center.  He was born in East Ham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts to the late Esther Crosby Gunn and Charles Angus Gunn, Sr.  Charlie was a member of First United Methodist Church Stanley.  He was a life insurance broker in Charlotte for more than 35 years working for Prudential and Southwestern Life before becoming an independent broker.  He was a member of the Stanley Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Shriners for over 70 years, starting out in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  Charlie was an avid gardener, woodworker, and in his younger years loved boating, waterskiing, and camping.  He was a loving father to his children and grandfather to his grandchildren.  He was the only life member of the Red Fez Club and a was a past Grand Royal Patron of the Order of the Amaranth and a past worthy Patron of the Eastern Star.  He leaves behind his wife Shirley Sellers Gunn of 32 years; children Charles "Billy" A. Gunn III (Gayle) of Denver, NC, Esther Gunn Lucas (Gary) of Marina, California; stepson Steven P. Haynes (Christy) of Stanley; grandson Matthew Charles Lucas (Brittany) of Santa Cruz, California; step grandchildren John Haynes (Catie) of Atlanta, Georgia, Travis Haynes of Athens, Georgia, and Emily Haynes of Gainesville, Georgia; step great grandchildren Marion and Jack Haynes; step brother Hersey D. Taylor (Joan) of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and step sister Vera Eaker of Cherryville.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Leona C. MacBride and Charlotte I. Walker.  A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Gunn’s life will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, January 20, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, 217 N. Main Street in Stanley, NC.  The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:00 pm prior to the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the food pantry and First United Methodist Church Stanley or to Diabetic Research C/O Carolina #10 Order of the Amaranth.
